Galway based artist Jim Kavanagh will be holding a special exhibition this month at the Galway City Museum with proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI).
Bog : Land : Scapes is the second collaboration between Jim and the London-based poet Richard Dyer. Their first collaboration resulted in A Western Journey, published in 2006 by Arlen House. This time they turn their attention to the Irish peat bogs. A DVD will be released at the same time, made in collaboration with filmmakers Ciaran Magill and David Andrews. Proceeds from the sale of the DVD, and the paintings will go to the NBCRI. The DVD contains poetry readings and interviews with the artists involved, as well as footage of the bogs accompanied by a haunting score by local musician Noelie McDonnell. Kavanagh’s inspiration for painting the bog came from numerous trips up and down the Curragh Line which cuts through the wet desert that runs for miles towards Lough Corrib. The paintings are made on a vast scale in order to reflect the enormity and drama of the landscape.
This event is kindly sponsored by Grooveyard, Bord na Mona and The White Room Gallery, and will run until 31 December.
